162. Breathe life into everything you do

Don’t just follow the blueprint.

One of the hardest things about writing now is to deviate away from the rules. On one hand, I have to follow the tropes that readers come to expect in my niche. On the other hand, if I do the same thing, I won’t build a fan base of readers who only love the stories I write.

Some people argue that writing is 80% art and 20% science. I think it depends with the kind of writing, but when you’re writing commercial fiction, it’s 80% science and 20% art. Anyone can get started and while it’s hard writing a book, it’s rather simple.

The hard part is telling a story that hasn’t been told before, or telling an old story in a new way. Again, easier said than done, but that’s how you breathe life into creativity. That’s what people crave for. It’s hard to find, but if you’re patient enough, if you dedicate yourself to the craft and give yourself space, it’s possible.

Remember, you are a creator — so create. It’s as simple as breathing.
