Where to find content marketing jobs

The need for content marketing staff is increasing. B2B budgets around this core aspect of business continue to expand yearly.

You can’t act all gung-ho and jump straight in, though. There is some preparation you need to do. This groundwork will help boost your chances of landing the job. What does it take to apply for content marketing roles?

If you are wanting to step into the world of content marketing, you may be wondering where you find these jobs.

Ask content marketers this question and the answers may vary. That’s because everyone uses different methods of landing jobs. However, if you are just starting out, here are some places where you can start looking for a job:

A word of caution when using freelance sites and social media to land jobs: you may find that some of the companies offering positions can be less than honest or ethical.

You may be asked to do an unpaid task as a means of seeing if you’re a good fit. Don’t fall for this trap! It can be a way for a company to get free work and then turn down your application.

Never work for free!

Pilots have a preflight checklist before they take off. Doctors have a checklist before they slice someone open. How would you feel if pilots and doctors just dived straight into the task?

It’s the same with applying for content marketing jobs. You need to prepare and do your homework (yes, there is still homework even though you left school). It may take a little bit of your time, but you want that job so badly!

Let’s run you through what content marketing jobs require.

Everyone is fighting for that coveted first page on Google. Of course, there is Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, Yahoo and a plethora of other search engines. However, Google is the king (or queen) of search.

As someone involved in content creation, you need to know the basics (or advanced stuff) of SEO. You may be asked what your process is for keyword research. How do you optimise the content for SEO?

Each niche has its own audience and buyer personas. What is your process for identifying the audience of your potential content marketing employer?

You also need to look at the voice of the content that the company already produces. Can you copy that same voice?

Here’s a tip: Copy out a couple of pieces of the companies’ existing content (don’t think White paper or e-book! Keep it simple). That way, you get a feel and an understanding of how to write in that voice.

What channels does the company use as part of its marketing strategy? Look at the social networks that they engage in. How do they respond to Likes and comments?

Once you have done the background work around these questions, explain to the company how you would reach their audience.

Coming up with fresh content ideas can be a daunting task at times. Consider the ways that you find inspiration to create your content.

Keyword research is the main method many writers use. However, you may find that you are given a title and then left to build an article around that.

How do you do in-depth research for your content?

When you are stuck for ideas, what is your process to get your creative juices flowing? Where do you find potential topics that you can write about?

Some ideas are:

In your content marketing interview, be ready to explain how you come up with new content.

Not knowing what’s happening can cause a lot of frustration and teeth-grinding. All that can be avoided simply by informing people as to…what’s happening!

In previous jobs or projects, how did you keep everyone updated with your progress? When you received an e-mail (or other forms of communication sent to you), how quickly did you respond? Obviously, nobody is expecting a reply back straight away (you’re not an Autobot!). A reasonable time frame would be within the next 24 hours.

Of course, that can vary depending on the agreement you have with those you are working with. People can get busy, reaaally busy. So, allow some give and take.

During your interview, you can talk about the communication aspects of the role.

You could be asked about previous projects.

What content did you create? It could have been:

Be prepared to explain how your content helped the project succeed. For example:

After that, offer a couple of ideas as to how you think your skills can help the company’s bottom line (newly converted leads mean more profit!).

This doesn’t mean you ring the police and ask if it’s a legitimate business. Use your research tools to look at what the company is currently doing. Look at their competitors.

Are there gaps in the competitors’ content that you can spot? Suggest a strategy around the gaps.

How would you enhance their current content? Are there new channels that you think they would benefit from? How?

Applying for jobs can cause you to have self-doubt. I know that I have suffered from that myself when reaching out to clients. Have faith in your ability.

Look at your past projects and how satisfied the clients/companies were with your work. That’s a free confidence booster.

Interviews can also be a nervous time (especially if you are wanting the job!). But keep your cool. Don’t feel like you need to rush your responses. Think carefully before you reply.

If your mind goes blank, take a few subtle deep breaths.

All the best with your application!
