20 Songs that got me through 2019

2019 was a bag of emotions for me. I went through these emotions mostly with music — as with silence. I have compiled 20 of my favourite songs that got me through these moments. Not all the songs on my 2019 playlist were released in the year under review, but they were super relevant to me.

I needed hope. I needed victory. I needed reassurance. I needed God to show up on my behalf. I needed life. In my dark times, I found a testimony.

2. Grateful — Moelogo

Moelogo’s “Magic” EP was my favourite music project this year. So sweet and easy. Off that project, “Grateful” was my highlight.

Life is hard but I’m grateful/Sometimes, yeah, I cry/Those who turned me down/It’s okay/Some are dead I’m alive/So I’m good I cannot stop, I’m gonna build me/I put my trust in you/

3. Coming Home — Pusha T feat. Ms. Lauryn Hill

Only song to make me cry this year.

When love is strong, you can do anything/Things go wrong, but you’ll stand up to anything/(But you’ll stand up to anything)/’Cause when the void is filled, you can do anything/(When the void is filled)/When the love is real, you can do anything

4. War — Ty Bello & Tope Alabi

Listening to “War” brought back childhood memories. One of the churches my parents attended back in the day had its founder, Reverend (Dr.) Ademola Afolayan (God bless him), sing this song at services to usher in the prophetic ministration. This song got me into prayer mood to fight for my hope and against forces of darkness troubling my soul.

5. Imole De — Dunsin Oyekan

No better way to drive away darkness. No better way.

6. Song of Angels — Dunsin Oyekan

Job Chapter 32 Verse 8 is my favourite scripture so any song that ministers to the deepest part of my being gets me speaking in tongues.

7. Secret — Burna Boy feat. Jeremih & Serani

Off Burna Boy’s chef d’oeuvre, “African Giant”, comes this sweet song. I am not a fan of R&B, and its uses, but I kept this on wild rotation. Someone said Mr. Ogulu got Serani out of retirement for this record. How much longer can we keep him out of retirement? Because he flamed this joint.

8. Ghost Town — Kanye West feat. PartyNextDoor (with background vocals by Kid Cudi & 070 Shake)

Mike Dean, that’s one of my favourite producers/sound engineers. The samples, Royal Jesters’ “Take Me for a Little While” and Dave Edmunds’ cover of “Take Me for a Little While”. But 070 Shake screaming “And nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free” made me a believer.

9. Freeee — KIDS SEE GHOSTS (Kanye West & Kid Cudi)

Part 2 of “Ghost Town”. What more can I say?

10. Set Awon? — Small Doctor

I am a big fan of Small Doctor. I have his two albums and have been earnestly waiting for the release of his third project — It’s been four years, why is Akeweje Oganla starving us? Not fair.

11. Love Someone — Lukas Graham

’Cause when you love someone/You open up your heart/When you love someone/You make room/If you love someone/And you’re not afraid to lose ‘em/You probably never loved someone like I do/You probably never loved someone like I do

12. Cuz I Love You — Lizzo

Forget the Billboard award that didn’t go to Lizzo. She’s my Female Artist of the Year. The album opener and eponymous track off her third album, “Cuz I Love You”, is so powerful you’d think you are a guest at the opera.

13. Animashaun — Davido feat. Yonda

Most people must have heard that Teni co-wrote Davido’s 2017 hit song, “Like Dat”. What most people don’t know (actually, the song credits show that) is that that spiritual part on the record was written by Yonda. “Animashaun” will sure get your faith rising although it wields a double-edged sword — but that’s not my consideration here.

14. Smile — Jay-Z feat. Gloria Carter

A mother’s words hit different, especially in your lowest state. Don’t listen to me, hear Jay-Z’s mum:

Living in the shadow/Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live?/In the shadows people see you as happy and free/Because that’s what you want them to see/Living two lives, happy, but not free/You live in the shadows for fear of someone hurting your family or the person you love/The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free/But you live with the fear of just being me/Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be/No harm for them, no harm for me/But life is short, and it’s time to be free/Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed/Smile

15. Ọlánrewájú — Brymo

I am sorry if you don’t understand Yorùbá. Just know that this record tells the story of patience, of hope. I love the live version he performed at Terra Kulture circa June 2019 more than the album version.

16. Hallelujah — The Game feat. Jamie Foxx

Every emotion needs a soundtrack — this is the one for losses and pain.

17. Another Thing! Do Not Be A Groupie — M.I. Abaga

Sometimes, you have to brag; tell the world what you have done. If not, someone will take your glory, and say you didn’t do jack.

18. OTHERSIDE — Beyoncé feat. background vocals by Bankulli

Short story: Shortly after the release of “The Lion King: The Gift” album curated by Beyoncé, which featured loads of African vocalists, songwriters and producers, I met Bankulli — and again, Grammy Award-nominated Seun Kuti. I was excited to meet Bankulli. He’s been in the music industry for years, say over two decades, worked with Jay-Z, Kanye West, Mike Dean, D’Banj, Wizkid, etc. Listening to this song give you that spiritual feel. You can tell Bankulli Osha was truly a choir member in the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church .

19. Tire — Mayorkun

Love is sweet.

20. Until We Try (This Lo’) — Aṣa

Love is sweeter.
