Grown Ups Never Jump

Nose toward the heavens, a drop pokes my eyelid
Two of the earth’s most basic and most vital components,
Dirt and water,
Coalescing to form that smell of quietude and nostalgia

You know
The kind where the air is blue and the urging whispers of the surrounding still
Float you atop the log over a creek
Heel toe like a tightrope
Arms stretched out
Heel toe
Sway left, teeter right as you try to keep your balance
Heel toe

The balance beam itself is your profession
You always wanted to be a gymnast but you’re older now and you’ve pulled out that dreadful umbrella
Alas the days we lean on those umbrellas

Heels together, toes point to where the sun rises and sun sets
A “V" like a book I read

Body straight, long like the pole that holds the streetlight that watches over my childhood

In what direction, I wonder,
Will the muddy clear travel?

Soles leave the ground
The bottom of me becomes a drummer’s stick and the top of the puddle becomes a cymbal as we come together there’s a crash Splash!
Woe is us because now your shoes are bulwarks
No longer music making tools
No tss
No badum
Only oh no and hurries
But what is the hurry? Stay a while…
won’t you?

We’ll have our feet bare
We can hold hands and get a running start together
Up toward the sky
Then down
So that our ends may drive the water’s beginnings to explode
Outward and upward

The Pan boy knows my pain
Perhaps I shall join him
I’ll be someplace where the children never stop jumping
