How to setup a raw EC2 instance through AWS

In this post I am going to go over the basics of setting up an EC2 instance through Amazon Web Services. Having spent the past week attempting to navigate the murky jungles of AWS documentation (see what I did there?), my hope is that this post will help some poor soul just starting out feel a tiny bit less lost with figuring out this process.

In the dashboard on the left hand side click on ‘users’. Click the blue add user button on the next page to add a new user. Choose a username (“administrator” works fine if you intend for this to be your default admin account) and be sure to click both check boxes in the Access Type section to grant administrator privileges to your new IAM user.

On the set permissions page, select “add user to group” at the top of the page and then click the “create group” button. Enter a name that indicates this is an administrator level group (again, administrator works well here). Check the box next to the policy “AdministratorAccess” and click the create group button.

Hit next a couple times (don’t worry about adding tags) and click the create user button to finalize everything.
