WPI Homepage Good Design Example

As a student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, I oftentimes have to make usage of the school’s website for information related to classwork. While there are arguably numerous examples of poor visual design choices throughout the website, I want to take the time here to showcase an example of a good design made by the school: the front page.

Shown above are three images of the front page for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute website. As can be seen, the front page adequately accomplishes the tasks that it needs to fulfill; namely, by utilizing a good color palette with excellent contrasts of color, by compartmentalizing information in order of importance through the usage of groupings, and perhaps most importantly, by providing easy access to whatever information pertinent to both visitors and students alike. This makes navigation and usage of this part of the website trivially easy. If a prospective student wants to learn more about the amenities of the school, or what kind of activities the student body engages in, they do not have to work hard in order to be presented with the information they require. Additionally, this page serves a useful purpose for students already in enrollment at WPI as there are easy to find tabs for student resources in the menu. Overall, the front page of WPI’s website provides its visitors with a colorful and vibrant display of meaningful data thereby providing excellent initial usability.
