I have been extremely lucky to be associated with art ever since I was a child. Art makes me calm. There’s much that’s left unsaid yet understood and that’s the beauty of it all.

There’s one thing about art though that everyone will agree with. Art is extremely personal to its viewer. There could be two people viewing the same work but have opinions that is poles apart.

Over the years, I have had the chance to meet people not only from the industry (artists, gallery owners, auction houses) but collectors (both eminent and secretive) as well. Everyone in the latter category have their own reasons for picking up a certain work. While some would relate to a specific work and hence acquire it (since art is never ‘bought’ as taught by my art teacher), there are many who pick up art just as an investment or because everyone has spoken about the artist highly. I am highly critical of those who belong to the second category as I feel that’s more of an insult to the artist and the work because its not gone to a place where it will be appreciated.

Coming to my art teacher, what can I say about him? My number 1 forever and always- My Father. The very first thing thing he taught me about art is- Never acquire a work if it does not call out to you, no matter what it is priced at or which way it sways on the investment ladder. If the work does not make you feel something, it’s not meant for you.

And that, ladies and gentlemen forms the basis of all the art that I have viewed in my life till date and will continue for those that I will view in the future. Yes, I am critical. Yes, I have my opinions (strong, I might add here). Yes, some of you might not agree or like what I write. But that’s the point. My writing, is exactly like that work of art. It’ll either grow on you or torment you with the quest of deeper understanding.
