162. Breathe life into everything you do

One of the hardest things about writing now is to deviate away from the rules. On one hand, I have to follow the tropes that readers come to expect in my niche. On the other hand, if I do the same…

Design Process

Build the infotainment system detecting the user’s context and drawing out proper notifications based on user behavior data.

In this post, I’m gonna share this project which focused on designing micro-interactions of IVI system user experience. It is not merely small interactions showing how the elements move. I wanted to architect the hierarchy between the packs of data according to their importance and relevance to driving.

Through research about technology and market in this field, we defined the stages of connectivity in-vehicle experience.
ECU data could make its own selling point at the mid-stage, which is feasible for now, aiming for ideally connected autonomous driving vehicle in the future. The mid-stage stands for the experience structure with data gained from the high-technology sensor for vehicles, ECU.

Information architecture and service features
We scoped out user needs and GM’s technologies to draw out service features. We matched both sides and mapped the connection following the gradation of the forementioned connectivity stages. Those service features were packaged and visualized as card UI.

1. Configuration of card UI
Each card basically includes this information:

2. Definition of card types

The process of user-system interaction with the elements of interfaces

3. Classification by connectivity
Despite the same service and source, the card shows gradational levels of contents according to each stage of network connectivity. So as to make the system cover respective needs of users and cope with any situations.

The process of each service card is developed

The first and most important premise for in-vehicle UX is the main, default screen of IVI is supposed to be the navigation map. So the service cards are floating without disturbing driving experience.

UI principles we were focusing on are:

Colors of cards: Urgent/Driving-related command cards which are prioritized are described as a red-ish color to represent its importance and distinction from others.

Dark mode interfaces: Not to interfere driving experience for safety, the most important issue of driving.

Thank you for reading and I am always open to your feedback!
