A Black Canadian Perspective

I remember from time to time, one of my favorite university professors saying something along the lines of “we experience the world through the lens of our location.” Meaning, the way all the…

Written in Emberville’s class on How to Write an Action Scene

The ink and sweat hits my nose, a waterfall of blood cascades. I feel the cow skin imprint. The smell of cow out weighs the metallic.

“What the?” I attempt. The book of the Lord comes at me again. Now there is a matching imprint on my other cheek.

“No back talk. You listen to your elder when they speak to you!” thunders my father. All in the name of discipline.

“I’m sorry,” squeaks out as I wipe the blood off my chin with my sleeve. I see the rage going from mild pink to palmagranite red. My arm is yanked away from my face.

“That shirt was expensive. You will not mar what we’ve provided you.” I try to take my arm back, but his grip only tightens. My mind goes fuzzy as my nose keeps gushing red.

The door flies open and I hear footsteps enter the room. A gasp and then I hear the crack. I try to gauge who entered the room, but my vision is blurred by the pain.

I look my father in the eyes and see a bull eyeing his red target. He seems surprised that I am challenging him. I have never squared off facing him. Briefly surprise flashes across his face. My other arm comes up and hits him in the stomach. An “ooff” sounds comes out and my gripped arm is freed.

Turning to the door I see a figure on the ground. Mom. No sound. No movement. I hear incoming sirens as I sprint out of the room.

Outside of our house the sun beats down as the cop cars slam to a stop outside. My hands raise to show I’m not aggressive. The cops fly into the house and I flop to the sun kissed grass. I hear brief shouts and then silence.

Moments go by and as I look up from the lawn I see my preacher father lead out in cuffs. Next thing I witness is a body being carried out. My mother. My Sacrificial lamb.
