How to Write a Masterpiece With Insights from Mamunur Rahman

Everything I learned from our interview and chats online

Those were the words warning me before diving into Mumunur Rahman’s story “If Aristotle Were a Medium Writer.”

Sometimes you get a gut feeling on Medium; you know what you’ve clicked on will triumph above the listicles, money worship, and clickbait we’ve all become accustomed to.

Mamunur did just this. He didn’t just deliver on an outstanding and hilarious work of satire; he showed me that he, in fact, is Medium’s antithesis. He turns trendy popular Medium articles on their heads and continuously finds success in his publication The Masterpiece.

It’s counter-intuitive to what works on Medium:

These are all tongue-in-cheek examples Mamunur pointed out to me. But they’re not far from the truth.

I used to work for a company that only posted listicles. We sapped the life from our readers. We were soulless vampires. Our goal wasn’t to inform our readers but to drive up the most clicks. I never felt proud of my work then and never shared it with my family. I’m very embarrassed by those stories now.

Is a trite soulless listicle the kind of legacy you want to leave behind?
