What Has Cancer Taught Me?

You might be surprised?

If you google, ‘what has cancer taught me,’ you’ll get 129,000.000 hits.

I know because I have.

So what has cancer taught me? Not a lot, if I’m honest.

The point of me wittering on here isn’t to tell everyone about a big awakening moment and celebrate how different my life is now but to reassure anyone who feels like me. Who feels the same as before.

Did it?

I’ve heard people say that cancer has made them tougher. That now they’ve got through cancer, they can get through anything, but that’s the point.

You can get through anything. You got through cancer because you can get through anything; you were already tough and resilient before you got cancer; you just didn’t realise it.

Everyone is born resilient, but most of the time, people think that other people have more resilience than they do. Or that resilience is something that you only access when something awful happens.

You could say that getting cancer is awful. But you aren’t resilient because you have or had cancer; resilience is innate in you all of the time. You can’t lose it or accidentally leave resilience behind on the hall table when you leave the house.

And although you may not feel particularly resilient right now, you can trust that your resilience is intact; it’s just covered up by the scary or tired thoughts you’re having.

And you will heal from your cancer treatment. It doesn’t matter what you go through, you will survive and thrive. I had a metre of stitches on one part of my body after my last cancer operation, and today, you can barely see the scar. Your body only knows how to be well, and the machine will grind into action to make this happen.

You’ve always been tough. Maybe you’re just aware of it since you had cancer?

Hallelujah to that.

But is that true?

Isn’t it just as appropriate to say that you were born for a reason?
