A poem pondering rewilding, based on a true story

When the heavenly bamboo parted
and two dogs emerged,
I kept running
but so did they —

in the pre-dawn shadows
shepherding me between them
as we circled the neighborhood.
Only when the dogs loped ahead
did I realize they were coyotes.

We’ll return when you’re ready,
they promised, my wolf-dogs.
Once you’ve mustered the will
to break through the bamboo forest,
fling your fear of heights into the ravine,
pitilessly stalk your inner prey,

and howl Magnificats
from every summit
after every stumble,
every bloodied paw
until, even in daylight,
the stars howl back.

One early morning, nearly 30 years ago, this actually happened to me. And, while I first felt a spasm of fear when I realized I’d been running with coyotes — were they stalking me? I’m a small woman — I have never forgotten the deep disappointment coursing through me as they disappeared into the shrubbery. I looked for them the next morning, but they never returned.
