Feeding The Soul at Glide Memorial

Ella:

About every month or so my family goes to a church in San Francisco to make sandwiches for the homeless. We had been looking for a place to contribute to the community and it took a long time before we found a family volunteer organization that allows younger kids to help. Our friend told us about Glide Memorial Church, which provides 2,000 meals a day for underprivileged people. Younger kids under 12 can work with their families to make and pack bagged lunches, and older kids can work in the kitchen chopping veggies or preparing the next meal in some way. Older kids can even serve the meals, too.

Since we are in the younger category, we start by putting gloves, hairnets and an apron, to keep all of the food safe in the industrial kitchen. Next we get started on either peanut butter and jelly, or ham and cheese sandwiches. Our family makes an assembly line to make each sandwich and place it in a plastic baggie. Then we put them all into paper bags with utensils and fixings.

This is a terrific experience because as you are working to help others, you are also enjoying the positive vibe of fellow volunteers. There is fun music playing and everyone is talking and laughing. One woman even decided to spend her birthday morning with her friends, chopping 500,000 carrots for soup!

One of the downsides of this activity is that the church is in a very edgy neighborhood so come with a parent, and stay with your parent.

If you choose to make sandwiches, then chances are you will probably end at a time around lunchtime, and especially after making 500 sandwiches, you will be VERY hungry. But don’t fret, we have come up with a delicious solution: La Taqueria, just 2 miles away in SF’s Mission District. In my opinion, it is the best burrito place I have ever been to. The homeless situation is a topic that really keeps me up at night. Countless men, women and even children spend every day and night under blankets or tents, suffering because they don’t have a roof over their heads. Can you imagine having to hold a blanket over your head because the rain is too cold and wet? Can you imagine having to salvage food from the garbage because you are starving? Can you imagine having people stare at you because you are on the streets of San Francisco, dirty, wet and raggedy? This is what some people have to push through to get by each day.

Glide Memorial Church finds a way to help feed the homeless who are in need. At Glide, like Ella said, volunteers are happy to come in and donate their time and work to help people get food. Every time my mom tells us that we are helping at Glide, we cheer — even my brother. We love working in an assembly line to do our part to reach a common goal: make sandwiches or chop veggies to give people a meal. As a family we have made over 500 sandwiches in one session. We feel pretty proud at the end!
